Pencil studies of butterflies, made as working drawings for the artist's publications, make up this photographic print from the years between 1912 and 1920. Before color printing was cheap and widespread, illustrators like this one often worked out each insect's wing pattern, outline, and shading in pencil, then reproduced the drawings in books and magazines. The photograph preserves the drafting stage of that process, so viewers can see the fine tonal work and corrections that a finished printed page would have hidden.
