A train being held up is the subject here, a scene that became a staple of American rail travel once transcontinental lines opened up remote country. Armed gangs stopped trains on lonely stretches of track, forced crews to halt, and targeted express cars carrying payrolls, mail, and bank shipments. The theme moved quickly into popular culture, most famously in Edwin S. Porter's 1903 film *The Great Train Robbery*, which helped shape the Western as a genre. In a picture like this, it is worth noticing how the drama of a holdup was pictured for viewers who might never have witnessed one.
