The title names the Tomb of Jesus and the Alexander Nevsky Chapel, a Russian Orthodox chapel within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The tomb sits in the aedicule, a small shrine at the center of the church that Christian tradition identifies as the place of Jesus's burial. Russian pilgrims and the Russian Orthodox Church maintained a strong presence in the holy city through the nineteenth century, building chapels and hostels for the growing numbers who traveled there. Photographs like this one, made in black and white, were often sold or circulated to pilgrims and armchair travelers who could not visit the site themselves.
