The title places this view at New Calvary, a rocky knoll north of Jerusalem's walls that the British general Charles Gordon proposed in the 1880s as a possible site of Golgotha. From there the camera looks toward the City of David, the low ridge south of the Temple Mount that is generally regarded as the oldest settled part of the city. Because the card is a stereograph, two nearly identical views were meant to be seen together through a stereoscope, giving the ancient hillside and rooftops a sense of depth. Underwood & Underwood sold such cards widely to American households in the 1890s, and cards like this one made distant holy places familiar to home viewers.
