The title "Westphalia" is the only specific detail this glass negative carries, and the Bain News Service attached it from its own caption cards, not from a verified source. Westphalia usually refers to a historic region of northwestern Germany, though the name also appears on several American towns, so the record leaves the subject open. George Grantham Bain's agency, based in New York, sent news and feature pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives now make up a large part of the Library of Congress holdings. Viewed that way, the plate is a working piece of a commercial news archive, and its missing date is typical of many negatives in the collection.
