Luther Burbank, the horticulturist and plant breeder, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Burbank spent most of his career in Santa Rosa, California, where he developed hundreds of new plant varieties, including the Shasta daisy and the spineless cactus, and his work drew visitors from around the world. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced and distributed images of notable people and events in the early twentieth century, so this portrait reflects the press interest in Burbank as a public figure. The record gives no exact date, so the negative is best read as a document of his celebrity during the Bain era.
