The only identifying detail for this picture is its title, "Hare," which the Library of Congress notes comes from unverified information on the negative or its caption card, so the subject remains uncertain. It belongs to the Bain News Service, the New York agency founded by George Grantham Bain, which sold photographs of current events, public figures, and everyday scenes to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Like many Bain images, it was made on a glass negative, a fragile medium that captured fine detail and was standard in press work until film largely replaced it.
