Lampooning the velocipede craze, this caricature takes aim at the early two-wheeled machine, with its pedals fixed to the front wheel and its iron-tired frame that earned it the nickname "boneshaker." The word "velocomania" was used in the late 1860s to describe the fad that swept Paris and other French cities, when men and women of every class rushed to ride the new contraption. Caricaturists found endless material in the riders' wobbles, tumbles, and dignified dismounts, and images like this one poked fun at the fashionable enthusiasm as much as at the machine itself. Its humor depends on a moment when a new technology briefly seemed to make everyone ridiculous.
