Its French title, *L'ignorance prouvée* ("Ignorance Proven"), signals an argument rather than a simple view of the sky. The piece belongs to the wave of ballooning imagery that followed the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air flights in 1783, when crowds in France gathered to watch the new craft rise. Printmakers quickly turned that excitement into satire and debate, often mocking experts, credulous onlookers, or the rush to believe in every new invention. Worth noticing is how the balloon here serves less as the subject than as a stage for a point about who really knows what.
