Léon Gambetta's name sets this picture apart, tying it to one of the best-known balloon flights of the nineteenth century. In October 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, the republican politician left besieged Paris by balloon, passing over Prussian lines to reach the provinces and help organize French resistance. Balloons were then among the few ways out of the encircled capital, and they carried mail and officials as well as passengers. The flight made Gambetta a symbol of defiance and remains a favorite episode in the history of French aeronautics.
