Sailors rescuing a man from rough sea beside a boat

Share

This print shows sailors hauling a man out of rough water alongside a boat, a scene that the title alone does not explain. The record does not say who he was or whether he had come down from the air, but the board places it under ballooning in France, a pairing that makes sense given how often early aeronauts came down over coastal waters and needed fishermen or sailors to pull them to safety. Rescues like this one were a recurring risk of flight in the late 18th and 19th centuries, when balloons had little control over where they landed. The image is worth looking at for the tension of the rigging, the heavy swell, and the crew's physical effort in the foreground.
