A balloon crew is shown being pulled from rough water by a rescue boat, a scene that makes the risks of early ballooning over open sea plain. Balloons launched from France were drawn to the English Channel, and the trip across it became a famous test of nerve after Jean-Pierre Blanchard and John Jeffries made the crossing in 1785. Crews had little control over direction and altitude, so a shift in wind or a loss of lift could quickly leave them in the water. The picture is worth studying for the boat, the sea conditions and the balloon's position as the crew is brought aboard.
