A balloon settling onto a rocky shore, with sheep scattering across the stones, shows a landing that early aeronauts often faced: coming down in unfamiliar country with startled livestock nearby. France led the field from the first public flights in 1783, when the Montgolfier brothers launched hot-air balloons and Jacques Charles followed with a hydrogen craft later that year. Scenes like this one helped the public picture ballooning as a new way to travel, one that could bring a craft down almost anywhere, including the coast. The title does not name a specific location, so the scene is best read as a typical encounter of the period.
