The caption card names the sitter as Reginald McKenna, but the Bain News Service recorded that name as unverified, so the identification deserves some caution. McKenna was a British Liberal politician who served as Home Secretary and then Chancellor of the Exchequer during the First World War, when wartime finance and domestic security dominated public debate. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied photographs of prominent people, including overseas figures, to American newspapers, so portraits like this one show how British leaders were presented to U.S. readers. The glass negative format preserves fine detail from the early twentieth century.
