Labeled ZR-1, this glass negative appears to show the Navy's first rigid airship, built at Lakehurst, New Jersey, and later commissioned as USS Shenandoah. The Navy's early 1920s airship program drew on German Zeppelin designs, and the ZR-1 was meant to show whether large lighter-than-air craft could serve as long-range scouts and patrol vessels. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, covered newsworthy subjects like this for its clients, so the picture reflects the public interest in aviation at the time. The record dates it to August 25, 1923, but the title comes from unverified caption data.
