Factoryville, a small borough in Wyoming County in northeastern Pennsylvania, looked much as this 1891 view shows it: a compact grid of frame houses, churches and shops set among farms and wooded hills. The name recalls the mills that once processed local timber and grain, and in the early 1890s the town's economy still rested on farming, dairying, and the lumber and tanning trades that ran through the surrounding counties. Keystone Academy, a school that drew students from across the region, gave the village an educational identity well beyond its size. Residents would have known the place as a quiet market and schooling town, connected by country roads and by rail lines that carried produce and timber out of the northern tier of the state.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Factoryville, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
