Britannia hands Lord Kitchener over to India in this drawing, captioned "We can ill spare him; but you see we give you of our best." Kitchener had just finished commanding British forces in the South African War, which ended in 1902, and he was then appointed commander in chief in India, where he served for about seven years. The cartoon's joke rests on the image of the empire lending its most celebrated soldier to a distant colony. The drawing, in India ink and white over pencil on illustration board, is dated July 16, 1902.
