Few images in this gallery pair an American president with a ballot box, and this ink-and-pencil drawing does so with a deliberate edge. Its subject ties Richard Nixon to South Vietnam's elections in the early 1970s, when Washington pressed for a democratic face on Saigon's government while American troops were being withdrawn under the policy of Vietnamization. The 1971 presidential vote, in which Nguyen Van Thieu ran essentially unopposed, was widely criticized as rigged, so a ballot box in this setting invites viewers to question how much the process meant. The drawing's exact origin is not recorded, but its pencil underdrawing and inked finish suggest a commentator working in a graphic, reportorial style.
