This pencil and Chinese white drawing on tan paper, dated Thursday, November 28, 1861, shows a Union army camp observing Thanksgiving, with the title noting that it was sketched on that day. Thanksgiving was not yet a fixed national holiday in 1861. Its observance depended on proclamations from state governors and the president, so soldiers in camp often marked the day in their own ways, with extra food, gatherings and a break from drill. Scenes like this one, drawn on the spot, give a sense of how the war's first winter looked from behind the lines, where officers and enlisted men shared a single holiday table.
