This drawing is dated Thursday, November 28, 1861, the day President Lincoln had set aside as a national day of thanksgiving, and it was sketched in a Union camp on that holiday. Pencil and white gouache on tan paper capture soldiers and officers gathered around the food, a rare view of a holiday meal in the field during the early months of the Civil War. Camp cooking in those years was usually rough rations, so a special dinner like this one stood out to the men who were there. The drawing gives a sense of how the army tried to mark the holiday away from home.
