Titled simply *Asia*, this color woodcut differs from many of Bertha Lum's prints by taking a broad, general subject rather than a single town, street, or scene. Lum, an American artist, made her woodcuts in Beijing during the 1910s and 1920s, working with Chinese carvers and printers who used multi-block color printing. Her work reflects the decorative traditions of East Asian art and her interest in presenting them to Western viewers. The c. 1920 date places the print near the height of her output in that period, and the layered color blocks are worth looking at closely.
