The sheet's subject is the pairing itself: New York and Brooklyn shown together across the East River, two neighboring cities that shared one busy waterfront. Brooklyn was then a separate city with its own government and did not join Greater New York until 1898, so the print records a boundary that was political as much as geographic. Charles R. Parsons and Lyman W. Atwater are credited with the design, and Currier & Ives issued the sheet as a color lithograph around 1875. Viewers today will want to look closely at the harbor and shoreline, which show how central the river was to daily life in both places.
