Naming Heinrich Schnee, the German governor of German East Africa, ties this poster to a colonial dispute over discrimination against Muslims in that territory. During the First World War, Britain ran propaganda campaigns across Asia and Africa that tried to win Muslim populations away from the Central Powers. A note from the American vice consul in Nanking says the poster was distributed in China in 1918 by a British propaganda committee. Its appearance in China shows how far wartime messaging on the Allied side traveled beyond Europe.
