The view looks out from the President's House across the grounds toward the city of Washington, a vantage that few artists or photographers of the 19th century had a chance to record so directly. The White House, still in its early decades as the official residence, stood at the edge of a capital that was more plan than reality, with unfinished streets and open fields between its government buildings. Pictures taken from this spot show how sparse the surroundings were compared with the city that grew up later. Look closely at the middle distance for the scattered houses and trees that marked the young capital.
