Bryantown, a small crossroads village in Charles County, Maryland, is the setting for this view of a hotel listed as Murray's, though the title comes from an unverified note on the negative sleeve. The glass plate was made in 1890 by the wet collodion process, which dry gelatin plates had largely replaced by then, so the image reflects a method already somewhat old-fashioned. The negative belongs to the Brady-Handy Collection, a group of plates tied to Mathew Brady's Washington studio and his associate Levin Handy, and the number 501 scratched into its emulsion shows how the plates were tracked.
