A large engraving titled *The Worship of Bacchus, or, the Drinking Customs of Society* announces its satirical aim in the title alone. Published in London by William Tweedie and printed by R. Holdgate on June 20, 1864, it was outlined on the steel plate by George Cruikshank, the caricaturist who had long campaigned against drink, and finished by the engraver Charles Mollram. This impression is a proof taken before letters, so it lacks the printed title and text that a finished copy would carry. Cruikshank's involvement ties the work to the temperance movement of mid-Victorian Britain.
