In this print, Cruikshank personifies strong drink alongside Death and the Devil, presenting alcohol as a figure that works in partnership with the two most feared powers of the age. Cruikshank, one of Britain's best-known caricaturists, turned to temperance themes in the 1840s and 1850s, when the temperance movement was gaining strength and campaigners were using pictures to reach readers who could not afford sermons or pamphlets. Allegory of this kind was a common weapon in that cause, and the print is worth studying for how it turns a vice into a moral threat that anyone could recognize.
