Rather than a single scene, this print traces a man's descent in stages, from his first drink to his grave, in the manner of a moral tale told in pictures. Temperance lithographs like it circulated widely in the United States in the 1840s, when reform groups were campaigning against cheap liquor and its toll on families and wages. The images were meant to be followed in order, so viewers could watch the decline unfold and draw the lesson for themselves. Because prints of this kind were inexpensive, they reached workshops, taverns, and parlors alike.
