Beyond its catalog number, NV1-371, little is recorded about this particular scene, so its story starts with the tradition it documents. The decorated Christmas tree, a fir or spruce brought indoors and hung with candles, paper ornaments and sweets, spread through English and American homes in the nineteenth century. An 1848 illustration of Queen Victoria's family beside their tree helped make the custom fashionable, and it moved from German households into middle-class parlors on both sides of the Atlantic.
