The bracketed title "[No work]" was supplied by cataloguers and states the subject plainly: joblessness during the Great Depression. Blanche Mary Grambs made this lithograph in 1935, and Will Barnet printed it at the Art Students League in New York, a school where many American artists of the period studied printmaking. Like much social-realist art of the decade, it treats unemployment as a matter of ordinary people rather than statistics, and the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein collection later grouped it with other images of working life.
