The record gives us a bridge under construction rather than a finished span, which places this drawing in the middle of the Natchez Trace Parkway's long building history. The parkway was developed by the National Park Service as a scenic route following the old Natchez Trace, the frontier path that ran between Natchez, Mississippi, and Nashville, Tennessee. Its bridges were designed to carry motorists over creeks and hollows while blending into the wooded landscape, and the construction phase drew on skilled engineering and hand labor. Drawings like this one show the planning behind those crossings, and they are worth studying for the way the structure is set into the land.
