The Natchez Trace Parkway is the subject here, and this drawing shows the road in its planning stage rather than as a finished route through the woods. Engineering sheets like this one set out the alignment, the curves and grades, and the placement of the roadway across the land. The parkway was built by the National Park Service as a scenic road that follows the old Natchez Trace, a corridor of footpaths and wagon routes used for centuries before the modern highway. Careful drawings of this kind were what turned that historic path into a road that bends with the landscape.
