The title, "All set. The OD is off b...," is cut short, but "OD" is the olive drab wool color of the American Army uniform, so the picture likely shows a soldier or unit ready to deploy. In 1918, the last year of the First World War, American troops were arriving in France in large numbers, and the olive drab service uniform, along with the campaign hat and puttees, became the standard look of the doughboy. Photographs from this period often captured the routine of mobilization: final inspections, packing, and farewells before troops sailed. Looking closely at the uniforms and equipment can tell you a good deal about the everyday realities of the war's final months.
