Loose, translucent washes render the rooftops and trees, and a single pale white building sits far off across the scene as its quiet focal point. The record does not name the town or the artist, so the picture is best read through the board it hangs on. Its Lincoln grouping links it to the America of his lifetime, when Springfield, Illinois, where he practiced law and raised his family, was a growing town of roofs and shade trees much like this one. Watercolor views of ordinary streets and skylines were a common way for both amateur and professional artists to record that period.
