Seated and facing the camera in a dark suit and bow tie, the sitter has the formal bearing of a studio portrait from the mid-nineteenth century. The gallery files it under Abraham Lincoln, who sat for many photographers during his career, and those images did much to shape how the public came to know his face. Long exposure times required subjects to hold still, which helps explain the composed look of such portraits. The title does not name the sitter, so the attribution rests on the gallery's filing.
