A man sits with his arms folded and a bow tie at his collar, captured on a tintype, a process that fixed the image directly onto a thin sheet of blackened iron. The gallery files it under Abraham Lincoln, but the title does not name the sitter, so that attribution is worth checking against other sources. Tintypes were quick and inexpensive, popular from the 1850s into the early 1900s, and were often made by small studios and traveling photographers. Because each plate is a single unique image, any wear or darkening at its edges says as much about how it was handled as about the person pictured.
