The dark coat, vest and bow tie, set against warm brown sepia tones, give this portrait a formal and somewhat somber air. The gallery files it under Abraham Lincoln, who sat for many studio portraits during his lifetime, usually in dark, conservative dress. Photographs of that period were typically made with albumen or similar processes, which produced the characteristic brown cast and meant that no two prints looked exactly alike. The clothing and upright pose reflect how mid-19th-century studio portraits presented public figures as dignified and composed.
