Titled *The Thinker*, this Life cover borrows the name of Rodin's famous bronze and applies it to a flapper, the decade's emblem of carefree modern youth. John Held Jr. published his cartoons of jazz-age young women in Life and other magazines throughout the 1920s, and his angular, playful line helped shape how Americans pictured the era's fashions, from bobbed hair to short skirts. The catalog lists romance as a subject, a theme that ran through many of his covers. Printed in color halftone for the March 18, 1926, issue, it shows how popular magazines turned flapper style into an instantly recognizable image.
