The title names Paqusilahl and Qagyuhl, two supernatural beings from Kwakwaka'wakw ceremonial life on the British Columbia coast, and the print records the masked dancers who gave them form in performance. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1914 and published it in volume 10 of *The North American Indian*. His ceremonial images were shaped by his own ideas about what Native life should look like, and many were posed or staged, so they document his vision as much as the practice itself. Viewers today often look to these pictures for the masks and costumes, while Kwakwaka'wakw communities maintain their own knowledge of the ceremonies.
