The only identifying detail in the record is a name, W.C. Redfield, which the Bain News Service recorded on its negative or caption card and which has not been independently verified. The name most likely refers to William Cox Redfield, a New York congressman who served as Secretary of Commerce under Woodrow Wilson from 1913 to 1919. Bain's studio photographed public figures for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, so this sitter was probably taken for a press audience. The glass negative format of the period captured fine detail that later prints could be made from.
