Few places in the Balkan Wars drew more newspaper attention than the Çatalca lines, which the record spells Tchataldja, a band of fortifications west of Constantinople. This picture shows a numbered artillery battery within that defensive system, the kind of emplacement the Ottoman army built to hold back the Bulgarian advance in late 1912. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs, distributed images like this to newspapers during the conflict. The record gives no date, so the exact moment is uncertain, but the subject ties the picture to the fighting of that winter.
