Inez Milholland, the lawyer and suffragist, is the figure this negative is titled after, and she is best remembered for leading the 1913 suffrage parade in Washington, D.C., mounted on a white horse and dressed in flowing white robes. The parade was organized by the National American Woman Suffrage Association on March 3, 1913, the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration, and it drew large crowds that turned hostile along the route. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency, recorded the scene on glass negatives, which preserve the procession as a document of the national push for the vote. Note that the title comes from the agency's own unverified caption data.
