The Grand Loop, the figure-eight road that links Yellowstone's major sights, is the subject here, with its scenic stretches and the bypass routes that let travelers skip busy sections. Much of the park's road network took shape in the early 1900s, when the Army ran Yellowstone and engineers cut routes through difficult volcanic and mountain terrain for horse-drawn traffic. Motor cars were admitted in 1915, and the roads were soon reworked to carry them. The road beds, bridges, and turnouts in pictures like this one show how the park was opened to tourists who were increasingly arriving by automobile.
