Yellowstone's road network is the subject here, set against a comparison of how travel through the park has changed over the decades. Early visitors in the park's first years moved along rough wagon tracks and stagecoach routes, while later photographs show paved roads, guardrailed bridges, and automobiles built for the park's steep grades and winding loops. Set side by side, the scenes show how the park shifted from a destination reached with horses and hard effort to one designed for motorcar touring. Yellowstone, established in 1872 as the first national park, opened its roads to automobiles in the 1900s, and its bridges and road alignments were rebuilt many times to handle growing traffic.
