The yacht pictured here is the Princess Alice, the vessel associated with Prince Albert I of Monaco, whose oceanographic voyages in the late 1800s and early 1900s made the ship a scientific as well as a royal craft. The castle visible in the background points to Monaco's rocky harbor, where the Prince's palace sits high above the water. The image is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a news photography archive assembled in the early twentieth century. The title comes from caption information written by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified, so the date is unknown.
