A yacht is shown at the start of a race off Clacton-on-Sea, the Essex seaside resort on England's east coast that grew into a popular holiday destination in the late 1800s. The picture was made by the photochrom process, a early method of producing color prints from photographs, developed in Switzerland in the 1880s. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold these views in bound catalogues of English scenes, and this one appeared in its 1905 catalog. The sailing yacht and the calm shoreline capture the leisure culture of Britain's coastal towns at the turn of the century.
