Pale sails and hulls fill the water at Hastings, the English Channel resort town in East Sussex, as yachts gather for a start. The record dates the view to the 1890s, a period when yacht racing drew wealthy owners and crowds to the south coast. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Photochrom Co. of London that reproduced photographs through layered lithographic stones. Detroit Publishing Co. distributed these prints in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of English views.
