Erie Basin, a sheltered inlet on the Brooklyn waterfront of New York Harbor, was a working center for ship repair and fitting out, and this glass negative shows yachts being refitted there. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, the photographs of the Bain News Service, which supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact year is uncertain. Still, the scene reflects a period when wealthy owners kept large sailing and steam yachts and relied on yards like those at Erie Basin to maintain them.
