Spindle Top, a salt dome rising from the flat coastal plain near Beaumont, is the place this print shows, and its 1901 discovery set off one of the first great oil booms in the United States. The gusher that came in that January sent oil high into the air and drew wildcatters, drillers, and major companies to the region almost overnight. Derricks crowded the surrounding land within months, and Beaumont grew from a small lumber town into an oil city. The record dates the print only to between 1900 and 1950, so it likely captures the field during the decades when its wells and rigs defined the area.
