Here a soldier at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington bends over a lesson in engraving, a detail that sets this halftone poster apart from the many wartime images of troops in uniform. The caption explains the point of the scene: time spent recovering from injury could be turned into training, whether a man was expected to leave the hospital cured or was permanently disabled. The poster promoted the Red Cross Institute for Crippled and Disabled Men and the Red Cross Institute for the Blind, which offered such instruction to veterans of the First World War, and its 1919 date places it just after the armistice, when thousands of wounded men were returning home and needed new trades.
